Researchers at The University of Manchester are invited to attend a series of Social Media “How To” Workshops:

– How to blog

– How to create research presentations for sharing

– How to Twitter

All workshops are designed with the researcher in mind, using relevant examples and practical applications. The workshops will be hosted at the University of Salford. Venue details will be provided upon confirmation of registration.

Note a limited number of places are available. Please only register if you are sure that you can attend. Participants are required to make their own way to and from the University of Salford for the workshops.

How to blog, 18 May 2010, 13:00 – 16:00, presented by Cristina Costa

This how-to workshop seeks to introduce participants to the practicalities of blogging to raise their profile and share their research interests. It will provide examples and a hands-on opportunity for researchers new to blogging to create and structure their personal blogging space/ digital presence.

It will also create a space for interaction and exchange of ideas, and questions regarding blogging in a research context.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

– created a personal blog;

– personalised the blog (managed the dashboard)

– published a blog post;

– tagged and categorized their blogposts

– created a page structure relevant to their activity as a researcher

– commented on other blogs

– learnt about RSS feeds

How to create research presentations for sharing, 28 May, 10:00 – 12:00, presented by Cristina Costa

This how-to workshop seeks to introduce participants to the practicalities of creating effective conference presentations. It will provide examples and a hands-on opportunity for researchers to create and structure their research presentations in a way that they are meaningful to both a face to face and an online audience. It will also create a space for interaction and exchange of ideas, and questions regarding blogging in a research context.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

– learnt about the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’t’ of slide presentations

– created an appealing slide presentation

– reused creative commons images from the web

– added audio to their presentation

– published their presentation online

– tagged and categorized their presentation

How to Twitter, 8 June, 10:00 – 12:00, presented by Cristina Costa & Dr. Pascal Venier

This how-to workshop seeks to introduce participants to the practicalities of microblogging (twitter) to raise their profile, connect to other people interested in similar research topics. It will provide examples and a hands-on opportunity for researchers new to microblogging to create and start using Twiiter as part of their digital presence / personal learning network. It will also create a space for interaction and exchange of ideas, and questions regarding microblogging in a research context.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

– created a twitter account

– personalised their twitter page

– learnt about the different types of tweets

– followed like-minded people on the twitter network

– explored different uses of twitter

– started using twitter to share their ideas and network
