Faculty of Humanities PGR writing retreat – (14th-15th May 2015)

The Faculty of Humanities Researcher Development team invites applications for a two-day residential writing retreat.

The retreat will take place over two days (14th-15th May 2015) at Chancellor’s Hotel, and is intended to support participants to progress an academic writing project of their choice. The project could be anything from a thesis chapter or journal article to a conference paper, but participants will need to have a clear project in mind when making an application. In addition to providing time and space away from normal work and home distractions, Dr. Ian Pople (Senior Language Tutor at the University Language Centre) will be on hand throughout the retreat to offer feedback and support. All meals and refreshments will be provided, along with a room at Chancellors for the night of the 14th May. Participants who wish to work on a laptop or tablet will have to provide their own equipment (although a very limited number of laptops are available to borrow from the Researcher Development Team).

This opportunity represents a significant investment on the part of the Researcher Development Team and, in recognition of this, we will be offering places on a competitive basis to the people who we feel will benefit most from the experience. Potential participants will therefore have to complete a short application form and indicate that their supervisor is supportive of their attendance. The deadline for applications is 09.00 on Monday 23rd March. If your application is successful you will be notified via a confirmation e-mail and sent a booking link.

In addition, successful applicants will also pay a nominal fee (£50) towards the cost of their place. This fee is payable when you book your place and any successful applicant who has not booked their place and paid the fee by the date specified in the confirmation e-mail will forfeit their place.

Successful applicants will also be required to attend a short preparatory meeting at 15.30-16.30 on Thursday 7th May in University Place 3.209 which is intended to ensure that they are ready to take full advantage of the retreat. We expect all applicants to be fully committed to the retreat – if you cannot attend for the full duration of the retreat (including the pre-meeting), please do not apply.

Completed application forms should be returned to Claire.stocks@manchester.ac.uk no later than 09.00 (GMT) on Monday 23rd March.
