ATTN SALC PhDs: Teaching Assistants for the academic year 2015-16

The SALC School is currently recruiting Teaching Assistants for the academic year 2015-16.

If you would like to be considered for teaching and/or marking duties during 2015-16, please follow the guidelines (click GTA Courses 2015-16 to view). This applies whether you are new to teaching or very experienced, as it enables us to make the recruitment process as transparent, efficient, and straightforward as possible.

If you haven’t taught for us before, on receipt of your application you will be invited to complete on line training via the Staff Training and Development Unit (STDU). TAs will also undertake a further 12 hours training at School level.

TAs who are already experienced in teaching in the Faculty of Humanities, will not need to undergo the same level of training, however there will be an element of additional ‘top-up’ training that must be completed. You will receive  information on any additional training.

All TAs will be required to complete Online Marking training, which should take no more than an hour; if you have not already completed this training, you must take it.

You must discuss teaching with your supervisor(s) before applying.

PGR students will be considered for teaching according to the following priorities:

  1. Students on scholarships and bursaries
  2. Students in years 2 and 3 (or years 2-6 for part time students) of their programmes
  3. Year 1 PGR students.

*PGR students can express an interest in teaching course units outside their Division. In all cases, the allocation of teaching will be at the discretion of the Head of Division and the Undergraduate Programme Director.*

Please note: if you have a scholarship or fees bursary that requires you to teach for a certain number of hours under the terms of the scholarship/bursary, you will still need to fill in this form to make your preferences clear.

TAs who are not required to provide teaching as part of a scholarship/bursary or who teach more hours than those specified in their funding letter are paid, according to experience, on Grade 5 of the University’s pay scale (

Teaching will be allocated and confirmed prior to Semester 1 of 2015/16 academic year and TAs are given a contract on the basis of a fraction of a full-time salary, dependent on the exact amount of teaching offered.

Your precise duties will be outlined in a Letter of Appointment from the School Office.

How to proceed:

  1. Please consult the attached School list of potential courses.
  2. Complete the form and send it as an email attachment(in word format) to by Friday 1st May.
  3. Please send only one form.
  4. You must consult your supervisor; please indicate, at the appropriate place on the form, that you have done so.

You will be notified by the School Office if you have been accepted to the Schools list of TAs at the end of May 2015. Teaching hours will be confirmed by September 2015.
