The Viva: Who? What? How?

Is your viva in the near future? Here is more useful advice from STEPS guest blogger Dr. Nathan Ryder.

Manchester STEPS

This is a guest post by Dr. Nathan Ryder. Dr. Nathan Ryder is a freelance skills trainer, working mostly with postgraduate researchers and research staff and a good friend to STEPS.

What is this?
An ebook. Twenty-seven chapters, nearly 20,000 words, and answers to the most frequently asked questions about the PhD viva in the UK. I deliver viva preparation workshops, and over the last five years I’ve gained a great understanding about the questions that distract PhD candidates.

What sorts of questions?
Questions about the process, questions about who is involved and how, questions about what to do and how to do it. More importantly I’m providing ANSWERS to these questions: in workshops people ask me “How…?” and I tell them. My goal as someone passionate about the viva is to help candidates get to the point where they go in and feel confident about talking to their examiners.
